Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps

Martin Taylor

Did you march or were you involved in the 1989 Les Mis show? What were you enduring memories?

I always remember singing in the tunnel.......

I remember Marc screaming at me in Bloomington...

Brian Prato - You're making the whole drum corps look bad!

The solar eclipse on the night all of the townies came out to watch us rehearse during finals week.

I thought I couldn't march in 1989, I was in my first year of university and had no extra money for drum corps. I was so excited to see the corps when they came to Canada. I knew very little about the show, and just a wee bit about Les Mis. Watching the corps practice broke my heart. The show was so beautiful and I wasn't marching because I had to work and save money for school. I decided that I HAD to march (hatched a plan) and that night I "ran away with the drum corps". It was a wonderful summer marching lead soprano first and then second mellophone when a spot in the line came available. Marching beside Gary I remember we tried to max out practice everyday, and laughing all the way! We thought we were so intense, but now that I look at the kids marching today we weren't all that. It was a great year, the corps was so focussed and committed to the show. Practicing the intro to Plummet Attack was the best!

I remember singing in the tunnel also. And Boozer chasing the cymbal line and throwing rocks at us. Ha ha!

I remember Boozer wiping me out in the pin-wheel when I was on the outside booking it. #5 rolled over me, and I was seeing stars for the longest time. I think we were in Canada, not sure where.

Rehearsal at Giants Stadium, especially the night Bon Jovi was doing soundcheck.

Marking your spot with yellow chalk, then trying to find your previous spot amongst MILLIONS of yellow chalk markings.

Pepe telling Wild Bill "I hope you have good tickets for Finals" during one of those end-to-end-at-208 marching drills at Ramapo.

Sully's toes, and the genius of a man making up drill as he went along (and it ending up that night's show).

Meg getting stabbed over her contra and getting in every DCI highlight for the next 5 years.

Hearing about judges' tapes where nobody could figure out we were playing two songs at the same time.

The roar every time Buck caught the flag.

On the starting line, waiting for the PBS broadcast to start, and almost crying because I knew I wouldn't get to do this again.

That so sounds like Pepe :-)

I remember the spring at Ramapo...it had the best and coldest water!

After Lori reminded me...I remember in the Spring, us all walking in a circle at the Meadowlands singing, Do you Hear the People Sing, holding the sheet with the words on it (amazingly Lori still has that sheet!).

I remember singing it again in the tunnel at finals.....crying

I remember singing it too! It was very moving! I remember Ramapo... one evening with a wild thunderstorm... we all ran to the dorm since we were basically holding lightning rods in our hands! horns and cymbals!

How about learning a new ending for quarterfinals, prelims and finals.
Learning the slow motion with flash bulbs!

Learning the flag exchange in plummet attack and hearing flags hitting horns!

Having April chase me around the field while I did laps for something I said wrong again!!!
